01 May Friday Files by: BOYAC – Designer Discovery – Sophia Madeleine
We spoke with up and coming Brisbane designer Sophia Cameron of Sophia Madeleine about what makes her tick and where she gets her inspiration from for the gorgeous interiors she is creating.
When did you know you wanted to go in to Interior Design?
Since I can remember I have created, decorated and designed. After a decade of working in the corporate sector I recognised that, to preserve my soul, I had to work with colour & textiles. I have been professionally interior decorating as principal of my business, Sophia Madeleine, since 2011, but have really ramped up the business in the last 2 years.
Who/what would you consider your biggest design inspirations at the moment?
I’ve just returned from China & am feeling inspired & refreshed by the vibrancy of Shanghai with her fabulous modern architecture, traditional buildings, historical hotels & the fabulous work of local Chinese artists. Instagram is a constant source of inspiration for me too, as are Australia’s leading home magazines & the American publication Architectural Digest. My mother’s sizzling wit & humour and Nicole Sylvestre’s imaginative mind (artist & art tutor) are always invigorating.
What is the best part of your job?
I love the variety of each job, big & small, and delighting clients with carefully considered choices in fabric, furniture, and ideas.
How would you describe your style?
My personal style is texture drenched & colour soaked, whilst ensuring relevance to Queensland’s lifestyle and climate.
What is your favourite Boyac product?
De Le Cuona Liquid velvet. You just want to drape yourself in it & sip a lychee martini.
Normandy linen – a fabulous fabric weight with a superb colour palette.
Best moment of your career so far?
A standout moment was being included in Australian House & Garden’s 2014 Top 50 Rooms & being chosen for the front cover of that issue. It was such a treat to be included amongst such talented company. Also – this has been fun! Thanks Boyac.
