Friday Files

This week on Friday Files we are interviewing the Principal of Colony, Gabriele Roscioli. He shares a short history of the company with us as well as an insight to some exciting projects Colony are currently working on.

How long have you been involved with Colony?
I HAVE BEEN WORKING SINCE 2007 (I DID WORK 6 MONTHS MEANWHILE I WAS GRADUATING AT UNIVERSITY)

Your father founded the company can you give us a short history?
THE COMPANY WAS FOUNDED BY SANDRO ROSCIOLI IN 1976, INITIALLY COLONY WAS PROVIDING INTERIOR DESIGN SERVICES AND BECAUSE THESE PROJECTS WERE SUCCESSFUL MY FATHER TRIED TO REPLICATE THE SUCCESSFUL PROJECTS IN SERIES (SO WE STARTED TO PRODUCE IN ROME, SOFAS, LAMPS, TABLES, BASICALLY HIGH END INTERIOR DESIGN) AND TIME BY TIME WE HAVE STARTED TO DESIGN SOME INTERIOR FABRICS TO MATCH OUR FURNITURE PIECES; IN THE MIDDLE OF THE 1980’S COLONY SWITCHED ALMOST COMPLETELY TO FABRICS FOR INTERIOR DECORATION HAVING A GREAT KNOW HOW FROM THE FURNITURE MAKING; THE IDEA WAS TO MAKE CLASSICAL AND FORMAL DESIGNS WITH A MORE CONTEMPORARY TWIST, WITH THE BEST POSSIBLE QUALITY IN TERMS OF YARNS USED AND SOPHISTICATED COLOURS!

What is your favourite fabric?
THERE ARE MANY THAT I LOVE (LA MORDOREE, MARLY AND RIO ARE MY FAVOURITES); IF I HAVE TO PICK ONE I WOULD SAY MARLY BECAUSE IT IS REALLY A GOOD EXAMPLE OF TIMELESS FABRIC THAT WE TRY TO DESIGN.

What is the most amazing installation you have been involved with?
RECENTLY COLONY FABRICS HAVE BEED USED FOR THE ITALIAN EMBASSY IN PARIS (PROBABLY THE MOST GORGEOUS EMBASSY ITALY HAS ALL OVER THE WORLD!) AND THE FOUR SEASON HOTEL IN TORONTO.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us?
SOMETIMES THEY USE COLONY FABRICS FOR THEATRE PLAYS, OPERA OR MOVIES; MEISSEN FABRIC WAS USED FOR “MARIE ANTONIETTE” (SOPHIA COPPOLA’S GREAT PERIOD MOVIE!).

Gabriele has supplied us with two pictures of himself enjoying his other two passions in life besides fabrics, skiing and rock-climbing.
