In 1858, the striped shirt became the official uniform of the French Navy. The design featured 21 horizontal stripes, one for each of Napoleon Bonaparte’s victories. It was said to also make it easier to spot sailors who had fallen overboard. Fashion followed with the classic breton stripe shirt, still ubiquitous today.
